There are so many features of digital cameras that make them unique in comparison to the traditional cameras. One such feature is digital camera filter. The filters function for the digital photography in the same way as they do in the traditional cameras. The filters can adjust the light entering into the digital camera in many different and favorable ways. It works in a way that post processing cannot be duplicated easily.

The digital camera filters are the devices for pre-processing the image. In the post-processing, the optical filters foster the maximum visual impact, maximum photo realism and various things in between. The mounted filter adds to the risk of burn, among a few other downsides that are not unique to the digital cameras. But it does not come to anything more serious when you will see any photographic challenge being nicely addressed by a digital camera filter. When you will compare the cost and benefit factors of the digital camera filters, it amounts to be much favorable. Indeed, it is not uncommon for the filters to make things difficult.

The working of the filters is pretty much the same with both the film and digital cameras. There are some digital cameras that are more liable to blow out high lights as compared to the traditional film cameras. The filters, in this case, reduce the excess contrast and greatly help on the side of digital. Still, most of the digital cameras are less UV-sensitive. The ordinary UV filters rarely deliver some worth to the added risk of flare. The infrared filters are considered to be much easier in use on the digital side. The users can actually enjoy working with them.

Many filters that are commonly used are handed out to match the recording and working functions of the digital cameras. the UV cut, neutral density, polarizing, close-up filters all fall into the more or less same category. The UV and IR pass filters serve to extend to the reach of digital photographer away from the visible spectrum. The effects of the camera are difficult to further duplicate in the post-processing activities.

There are different types of filters available in the market. Creative filters alter the light directly to make the images warm, accent, soft, green, red and so on. Many effects of the creative filters can be duplicated comfortably in the post-processing activities. The protective filters are widely used to safeguard the expensive or replaceable camera optics.

It is also important for you to learn how to mount and size the filters on digital cameras. It is often seen that anyone who buys the filters for a digital camera faces problem on practical issues sooner or later. There are some technical things that you must think beforehand. The two practical issues can be solved by knowing well about the mounting method and the size. Well they can be different from one camera to the other. Camera variations can still be inevitable, but it is important to know about the basic working of the digital camera filter.

The era of Digital Photography commenced when two scientists ( George Smith and Willard Boyle) invented the device called ‘Charged Coupled Device’ (CCD) in 1969. Since then the CCD has been widely used in the production of modern digital cameras. It is the heart of all digital cameras and now called the image sensor. These two scientist, never thought that CCD will be extensively used in digital cameras, that time they invented the CCD to develop the first solid-state video camera (in 1970) which could give sharp images which was enough to be used in television broadcast (1975).the two scientists didn’t plan it this way.

1.Introduction of First Digital Camera – Mavica

Since the above invention world had to wait around five years to see breakthrough in digital photography. In year 1981, world renown Sony Corporation introduced the first prototype digital camera which was called Mavica (Magnetic Video Camera). This new camera called Mavica was an electronically operated still camera with two CCD chips, It recorded images using magnetic impulses on to a compact two-inch diameter still-video floppy disk. However the first digital cameras for mass market were available in mid nineties.

It could be hooked to a computer through a serial port cable. For example, the cameras which came out with such facilities were Apple Quick Take 100 camera (February 17, 1994) worked with a home computer via a serial cable. The other similar digital models were introduced to the market by Kodak (DC40 camera in March 28, 1995), Casio ( Casio QV-11with LCD monitor in late 1995), and Sony ( Cyber-Shot Digicam in 1996).

2. Digital Image Software and Printers

Although there were several manufacturers came out with different types of digital cameras, none was so popular as Kodaks DC40 digital camera which produced for mass markets. Later Microsoft and Kinkos both collaborated with Kodak to introduce the digital image-producing software workstations and corner shops. The consumers were able to use these software and corner outlets to develop photo CDs and photographs as well as adding digital images to the documents. Similarly, IBM worked with Kodak introducing the internet-based network image exchange. At the same time, Hewlett-Packard was the pioneering company to make the first color inkjet printers that helped consumers to print good quality images which was an impetus to the popularizing the digital photography.

3.True Digital Camera

In 1988, Fuji developed the true digital camera, DS-1P which could record images in the form of computerized file. Other unique feature of this camera was its internal memory chip with a capacity of 16 MB while using a battering to store. However, it was noted that this Fuji camera never marketed in the United States or not even in Japan. As such, we can reasonably assume that the first commercially produced digital camera was Logitech Fotoman (in 1990) which was also called as Dycam Model-1. This camera used a CCD sensor which stored images digitally and later cold be transferred to Personal Computer (PC).

The background or evolvement of digital photography stress that that the future is the digital photography. This is already proven as the recent market surveys indicate that in year 2006, approximately 35 billion images were printed or stored in Western Europe.

Advances in technology are changing the way people collaborate in the board room as well as the classroom. One of the latest office machines to enhance communication is through the installation of a digital whiteboard. Digital whiteboards are sometimes referred to as interactive or smart boards. Digital whiteboards look like standard whiteboards; however, they also serve as a projection screen and have a touch sensitive screen that allows the user to control what is being presented on the screen.

So how does a digital whiteboard work? The typical digital whiteboard projects a computer image onto the screen and allows the user to control what is on the screen with a marker, pen, or finger. Users can open files, print documents, or write notes on top of what is being displayed to write on top of the image being projected on the screen and passes that information back to the computer for access at a later point in time. Presenters can access, email, or print these files at a later point in time and even upload them to the web directly from the digital whiteboard.

The digital whiteboard is becoming popular in both learning and business environments.

One of the reasons digital whiteboards are popular in the classroom is that they help make the class more interactive where students are prone to pay more attention to the materials being presented. Teachers can create interactive lessons increasing participation and productivity. The Digital whiteboard is popular in classes that require a lot of diagramming, note-taking, or illustrating, such as match, science and English. Teachers can simply take notes on top of the projected image whether it is educational software, various media formats, or standard computer files. At the end of the lesson, teachers can save the files directly from the digital whiteboard to the computer and email it to students to take with them. Educators who have installed digital whiteboards in their classrooms are seeing an increase in performance and collaboration between teachers and their students. A digital whiteboard can help teachers deliver exciting and stimulating lessons that could otherwise be difficult to present.

Digital whiteboards have also become popular tools in the boardrooms and meeting rooms of many businesses. Digital whiteboards add excitement to traditional presentations and meetings. They serve as great communication tools for businesses that have remote employees or satellite offices. Employees can collaborate from different geographic regions, saving time, money and energy. With a traditional whiteboard, someone had to document the whiteboard contents, enter the data into a computer, print material and presentation copies, and then manually email or host the materials onto the web. With the digital whiteboard, all of these processes can be eliminated as they can be done directly from the board room. Some digital whiteboards such as the Panasonic Panaboard include a built-in printer allowing users to print handouts directly from the board.

As technology continues the change the way people communicate and interact, look for innovative products such as the digital whiteboard to play a key part.

When shopping for a digital whiteboard, be savvy and choose the best board for your environment. A lot of online retailes like iShopit.com offer wholesale prices on digital whiteboards.

Photography is an interesting hobby. It eases your mind and soul and brings out the creative instinct in you. But this art gets more and more interesting when done with the use of a digital camera. It also introduces one into the world of digital photography. Here age, sex or skill does not matter. There was a time when people hesitated to get into the hobby of digital photography, the basic problem being the investment, but now, the time has changed and people have seriously started Digital Photography as their hobby. Do you like to be one such person?

All that matters is your passion for the art of digital photography.

Process of Digital Photography

The process of Digital Photography is a chain that starts from the shooting of images and ends with the display of the photographs. In the digital world, it is the image that forms the key element. And the picture quality of the image is determined by its resolution. The resolution in turn is the number of horizontal and vertical pixels on an image. Therefore resolution is the key factor that decides how big you can print your image or how much of it can be cropped.

Steps involved in Digital Photography

In order to understand how the digital camera suitably fits into the system of Digital Photography it is necessary to understand the steps involved in making digital photographs.

First Step: Input of Images

The input device in a computer is probably the keyboard. However, in Digital Photography the input devices are those that capture the images.

Digital Still Camera – It shoots images in a digital format.
Digital Video camera – It can capture images like a digital still camera.
Video cameras – It captures images onto a video format.

Second Step: Processing the Digital Photograph

Digital photographs can be stored onto your PC after they are taken. They can be then edited using in whatever way you want using the photo-editing program, Adobe Photoshop. Here the options are endless.
Few ways by which you can process your images

1.Crop parts of the image that you feel unnecessary and highlight the main frame.
2.If you wish to post the photos on the Web then trim down the number of pixels in the image so as to make it smaller.
3.Use filters to give the images the look of an oil painting, watercolor or the look of your desire.
4.You can stitch-up multiple frames in a single frame to create a landscape effect.
5.For a 3D stereo effect or an animated image merge two images and you can display this on the Web.
6.To improve the images make slight alterations in brightness and contrast.
7.Mish mash the images to create a photo medley.

Third Step: The final output, the Photograph

In Digital Photography there are many ways through which you can display and share the photographs you have taken.

Some of the well-known ways are as follows

1.Just e-mail the digital photographs to your friends or to family members.
2.Post the digital photos to the Web Service that will allow printing the digital photographs on T-shirts, mouse pads, posters and even on cakes.
3.Add the digital photographs to a word processing program or to the desktop of your PC so as to publish it as a document.
4.Mail the digital photographs on a Website or onto a Photo network.

Imagine taking pictures and printing those moments later. Unleash the power of digital photography and this is what happens. All that are required for taking a digital photograph is a digital camera, a PC, a USB connection to the computer, a printer and a photo-editing program. The first step in taking a digital photograph is to familiarize yourself with the digital camera. Now, do not get frightened! Here is how you can deal with it.

All about a Digi Cam

Pixel
This is short for picture element, the smallest piece of a digital image. A pixel is also referred to as a single point in a graphic image. These elements are the building blocks of your picture, similar to floor tiles or the squares in a mosaic. Put millions of these tiny squares together and you have a digital picture. In fact, “megapixel” is a simple way of saying one million pixels.

Resolution
This refers to the number of pixels in an image. The more the pixels in a digital photograph, the more detail the digital photograph can contain and better the image quality. It also refers to the sharpness and clarity of a digital photograph. It is measured in Mega pixels. One Mega pixel is equal to one million pixels. A low resolution refers to less than 1 mega-pixel, high-resolution refers to greater than 1 mega-pixel and advanced high resolution is 4 mega-pixels or more. In Digital Photography the resolution of the camera is the most necessary feature to produce first class photographs.

Auto Focus
A good choice for general picture taking is auto mode. This setting, allows your digital camera to automatically set the exposure, the focus, and the flash. With auto mode, you may override the automatic options of the flash and choose to turn the flash off, use fill flash, or red eye reduction.

Digital Zoom
This crops your image and magnifies the result of the cropping. This magnification process is called interpolation. Sacrificing image quality to capture the moment is more important than not getting the picture at all.

Optical Zoom
This physically tends to magnify the subject. A motor controls the lens movement. When you press the switch to W or T, the subject is either magnified or reduced in size. They are wide-angle (reduce) and telephoto (magnify) respectively. This allows you to view the subject before taking the picture.

Memory
It denotes the number of images stored in the camera.

What is up next, regarding the components that are drawn in with Digital Photography?

Items associated with Digital Photography

Computer
Keen to know the task of a computer in Digital Photography! The Computer is the vital component in Digital Photography. It does the most important task of storing and displaying digital photographs from the digital camera. It allows those digital photographs to get printed onto an array of digital printers that are available.

The display monitors
The display monitors shows you the images in a broad range of colors. However the image can be seen in different looks when viewed on various display monitors. It is for this reason that it is advised to set the settings of the monitor to the default values as set by the manufacturer.

Printers used for Digital Photography

This prints the image on a photographic paper. Inkjet, Dye sublimation and Thermo Autochrome are few of the Printers used in Digital Photography.

Now you know it all. Digital photography is no longer a stranger!! So, start clicking away.

Analog and Digital

As a technology, analog is the process of taking an audio or video signal (the human voice) and translating it into electronic pulses. Digital on the other hand is breaking the signal into a binary format where the audio or video data is represented by a series of “1″s and “0″s. Simple enough when it’s the deviceanalog or digital phone, fax, modem, or likewisethat does all the converting for you.

Digital versus analog can refer to method of input, data storage and transfer, the internal working of an instrument, and the kind of display. The word comes from the same source as the word digit and digitus.

The digital technology breaks your voice (or television) signal into binary code a series of 1s and 0s transfers it to the other end where another device (phone, modem or TV) takes all the numbers and reassembles them into the original signal. The beauty of digital is that it knows what it should be when it reaches the end of the transmission. That way, it can correct any errors that may have occurred in the data transfer. What does all that mean to you? Clarity. In most cases, you’ll get distortion-free conversations and clearer TV pictures. The nature of digital technology allows it to cram lots of those 1s and 0s together into the same space an analog signal uses. Like your button-rich phone at work or your 200-plus digital cable service, that means more features can be crammed into the digital signal. Digital offers better clarity, but analog gives you richer quality. Digital like the VCR or the CD is coming down in cost and coming out in everything from cell phones to satellite dishes.

Phone lines

Digital lines are found in large, corporate phone systems. Though digital lines carry lower voltages than analog lines, they still pose a threat to your analog equipment.

Analog lines also referred to as POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), support standard phones, fax machines, and modems. These are the lines typically found in your home or small office

There are digital-to-analog adapters that not only let you use analog equipment in a digital environment, but also safeguard against frying the internal circuitry of your phone, fax, modem, or laptop.

Cordless phone

The very nature of digital technologybreaking a signal into binary code and recreating it on the receiving endgives you clear, distortion-free cordless calls.

Cordless phones with digital technology are also able to encrypt all those 1s and 0s during transmission so your conversation is safe from eavesdroppers. Plus, more power can be applied to digital signals and thus, you’ll enjoy longer range on your cordless phone conversations.

The advantage to analog cordless products? Well, they’re a bit cheaper. And the sound quality is richer. So unless you need digital security, why not save a few bucks and go with an analog phone? After all, in home or small office environments where you may be the only cordless user, you won’t have any interference issues.

Keep in mind, when talking about digital and analog cordless phones, you’re talking about the signals being transferred between the handset and its base. The phones themselves are still analog devices that can only be used on analog lines. Also, the range of your cordless phoneanalog or digitalwill always depend on the environment.

Cellular Phones

Perhaps the most effective use of the digital versus analog technology is in the booming cellular market. With new phone activations increasing exponentially, the limits of analog are quickly being realized.

Digital cellular lets significantly more people use their phones within a single coverage area. More data can be sent and received simultaneously by each phone user. Plus, transmissions are more resistant to static and signal fading. And with the all-in-one phones out nowphone, pager, voice mail, internet accessdigital phones offer more features than their analog predecessors.

Analog’s sound quality is still superioras some users with dual-transmission phones will manually switch to analog for better sound when they’re not concerned with a crowded coverage areabut digital is quickly becoming the norm in the cellular market.

Better Sound Quality

Digital offers a better quality of sound. Proponents of digital claimed too that because digital scrambled up the signals into bursts, it was more secure than analog and can help thwart “cloning,” an act of grabbing phone account information over the air in order to copy then resell that information for piracy purposes. By some industry estimates, close to $650 million in wireless services has been coveted by these big-eared crooks, which only adds onto the operator’s bottom line a cost that is eventually passed on to the customer. Digital has stronger battery life than analog, and for the most part, better, more modern features on the phones.

With today’s sophisticated digital cameras it is relatively easy to take good digital photos. This is especially true if you are using s point and shoot digital pocket camera. However even with such a camera you can follow some tips that will result in better higher quality digital photos. These tips become much more important when using high end SLR cameras in manual mode.

There are many things that can go wrong when taking digital photos. Many of those things could be easily avoided if only the photographer was aware of them. Here is a list of things that can go wrong and some simple ways to avoid them.

Blurry digital photos: Also known as out of focus digital photos the objects in such digital photos look blurry or smudged. Many people think that by using the automatic focus feature of the camera all digital photos will come out sharp and clear. This is not true. There are some scenes that are harder to focus on. Such scenarios can fail even the most advanced digital camera. Moreover with most digital cameras (excluding SLR) you do not really see how focused the camera is when taking the photo. Looking at the LCD shows you how the photo would be composed but not how focused and sharp it will come out. Even by reviewing the photos on the small LCD it is hard to see on those small screens if the digital photo is focused correctly or not. With digital SLR cameras this becomes easier as looking through the viewfinder provides an accurate focus feedback through the digital camera’s lenses. Digital cameras provide some sort of feedback either audible or visual when they are focused. They also display a green rectangle (or another shape or color) around the area of the photo that they focused on. It is important to make sure that this area is where the objects you want to focus on are especially when there are multiple objects in different distances from the camera.

Blurry photos can also result from shakings of the camera. Such shakings are mostly a problem in conditions where a long shutter time is used. When the shutter opens for a very short period small shakings would not be noticeable. If the shutter is opened for longer period usually longer than 1/250 of a second shakings become an issue. To avoid such shakings learn how to hold the camera steady using two hands and leaning on your face. If the shutter speed is very slow try to stabilize the camera preferably using a tripod but if you do not have one you can improvise using any stable surface such as a table or a wall.

Dark digital photos: Digital photos that look dark are usually a result of underexposure. They are dull and lack details. In most cases the camera can automatically set the exposure to produce good quality digital photos. In some scenarios however the camera sets the wrong exposure. Learning to identify these scenarios can help you compensate for such camera errors. If there is a very bright light source in the photo it can confuse the camera to believe that there is enough light in the scene for a low exposure setting. It is a good assumption that scenes that have extreme lighting differences between different areas will confuse the digital camera. In such cases you can manually correct the exposure. If your camera supports bracketing a good option would be to take a few photos of the same scene in different exposure settings and later on to choose the best one.

Very bright photos: Digital photos that look very bright are a result of overexposure. They usually have areas that are blown out or even completely saturated. The scenarios that cause overexposed digital photos are similar to the one mentioned above that cause underexposed photos. You can identify them in the same way and compensate the exposure setting or better use exposure bracketing if your camera supports it.

Unwanted shadows: Sometimes unwanted shadows will appear in a digital photo. For example when taking a portrait digital photo there are unwanted shadings on the object’s face. The reason for such shadings is that the camera measures the ambient light and sets the exposure accordingly. However even with the right exposure setting shades can appear on the object depending on the angle of the light source relative to the object. In the mentioned portrait photo if the light source is from the side of the object’s face the object’s nose can create shades. In another scenario the object is wearing a hat and it is lit from above. The hat creates shades on the object’s face. The camera can not automatically correct such shades as it simply measures ambient light and can not figure out the light source position relative to the object. It is easy to fix this problem when you identify a scenario that can be problematic set the flash to a “fill in” mode (make sure that the object is within flash range) the flash will fire regardless of the exposure and compensate for the shades.

The object in the digital photo is completely dark: This is also known as a silhouette effect. It happens when taking a digital photo of a scene that has a very bright light source right behind the object. One good example of that is taking a photo of a person during sunset or sunrise. The result is a dark silhouette of the person with a good photo of the sunset or sunrise background. Similar to the shading problem this problem can be solved by setting the flash to “fill in” mode. The fill-in flash lights up the object (you need to make sure that the object is within effective flash range) and results in a quality digital photo.

Many of us do not think twice about the usage of our digital camera’s flash assuming that the camera will use the flash automatically as needed. Flash however can and should be manually set in many scenarios resulting in high quality digital photos.

The most common usage of flash photography is when there is not enough ambient light for example when taking an indoor digital photo in a dark room. There are many other ways in which you can use your digital camera’s flash to get high quality digital photos. One such usage is fill-in flash.

Before setting your flash to manual mode and making more efficient usage of it you should know a bit more of the technology and history behind flash photography. Flash photography has been around for more than a century. During the early days of photography flash was implemented as a powder that was literally lit by either fire or electrical current. At that time flash photography was a risky business. Digital cameras today use a safe implementation by utilizing electronic flash tubes that are automatically synchronized with the camera’s shutter.

You have two options for using flash with your digital camera. The first option is using the digital camera internal flash. Practically all digital cameras have build-in flash units. Most cameras also allow the usage of an external flash unit. Such flash units can be either mechanically attached to the digital camera or they can be connected to the camera via a cable and mechanically positioned on a tripod or any other mechanism. They are synchronized and controlled by the digital camera. External flash units vary in price and features. They can have different maximum light energy that they can emit and different mechanical capabilities (tilting, skewing).

In automatic flash mode the camera sensors evaluate the amount of ambient light in the scene. The digital camera fires the flash if the amount of ambient light is not high enough. There are limitations to the cameras automatic sensors resulting in either firing the flash when it was not needed or vice versa.

In some scenarios the usage of flash can result in poor digital photos. For example when the object is too close to the digital camera the flash light will be too strong and will wash out the object. Another example is in scenarios where the flash creates unwanted shadows in the digital photo. Yet another example is exaggeration of details such as when shooting a digital photo of an older person the skin wrinkles and imperfections details can be overly detailed.

Digital camera’s flash units have a certain effective range. This is a limitation of how much light energy the flash unit can emit. Internal flash units usually have shorter range than external flash units. If the object in the photo is outside of the flash range the flash will not be effective and the object will be dark. On the other hand if the object is too close to the flash unit or the flash unit emits too much energy the object will be washed out. If your object is outside of your flash unit effective range you should turn off the flash and use slow shutter photography preferably with a tripod or another stabilizing mechanism. If your flash units allows the setting of the light energy that will be fired (usually by setting the distance to the object) make sure that it is set right to prevent washed out objects.

In some scenarios there will be enough ambient light to take a digital photo but without the usage of the flash the digital photo quality will be very poor. In such scenario if the camera is left on automatic flash mode it will not fire the flash. For example daytime photography with an object that is shadowed. If the object is wearing a hat it can create shades on the object’s face or when the object is lit from the side the object’s nose can create shades too. Putting the flash in manual fill-in mode will force the flash to fire. The flash will lit those shadowed areas and prevent the shades in the final digital photo. The object of course must be in effective flash range. Another example is an object that is lit from behind such as when taking a digital photo of an object against a sunset. Without a fill-in flash the photo will likely be just a dark silhouette of the object.

These were some basic concepts behind flash usage. There are many other advanced options for your digital camera flash. For example bounce flash can result in great digital photos in that mode instead of pointing the flash directly at the object it is pointed to some reflecting surface like a wall or a special reflector. The result is more natural light and color rich digital photos.

Many of us use digital cameras to take our pictures for a variety of functions and events. We need a good digital camera to take these fantastic pictures. To help us with choosing a good digital camera we can use digital camera ratings. These ratings will enable us to select the camera that will be suited for our photographic abilities.

To see if we have found a reliable way to choose a digital camera we can look at digital camera buyer’s guides, or photography magazines to select the criteria that will help us. These various digital camera ratings will let us see how the different digital cameras perform in value for money, the handling of the camera, the performance of the camera and the various features that can be found.

When we look at the digital camera ratings for cameras like Minolta, Nikon and Pentax we need to see the performance of these types of digital cameras in different digital camera ratings. The ratings will briefly cover the aspects of how good the optics in the digital camera of your choice is.
