Nikon Coolpix S1000pj won’t be with us until October, others also delayed

Alas, all those dreams we’ve had of rocking parties with our awesome projector-packing camera will have to wait an extra month. What pernicious outside factors have delayed the S1000pj? Unexpectedly high demand that even Nikon, whose sole purpose in life is making imaging equipment, couldn’t satiate in time. The new dates for your calendar are October 23 for the 12.1 megapixel, 5x optical zoom S1000pj, and September 19 for its S70 and S570 brethren. The S70 switches out the projector for a 3.5-inch OLED multitouch screen, and should prove quite the attractive proposition in its own right, but for now all we can do is look admiringly from afar. Sigh.

ASUS debuting two ultrathin laptops with 45nm Intel Penryn chips next week?

Posted by: dennis  :  Category: Computer & Internet, Gadgets, Science, Technology
f7d89 asus logo on machine rm eng ASUS debuting two ultrathin laptops with 45nm Intel Penryn chips next week?

Those 45nm Intel Celeron 743 and SU2300 CPUs we’ve been seeing on spreadsheets and roadmaps may have found themselves a home with ASUS, if this DigiTimes report has any weight to it. According to the outlet, two new ultrathin portables powered by the aforementioned processors are set to launch on September 7th, with the first markets to get shipments being Taiwan, China, and Europe. Details are scarce beyond that and there’s no mention of price, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it hit the $700 mark up to maybe even $1,000. Other sources say MSI and Acer will be making announcements of their own ultrathin laptops not too long after. September 7th is mighty soon, so part of us wonders if “launch” here is simply an unveiling, but in either case if there is something going on in a week, we can’t imagine we’ll get through the next few days without new factoids trickling out in the open.

eaea7 bradley pre 2 Bells latest Pre ad insults Americans, old people, and bloody roller derby girls in one pass

With the latest installment of Bell’s “Meet my Palm Pre” series, paid spokesman Bradley here has basically guaranteed himself that he’ll be visited by elderly American roller girls with bad attitudes and a taste for justice. Some of the gruesome highlights:

“Unlike our neighbors to the south, Canadians are an active people.”
“Coupe de Kill is kinda scary. I should probably get out of here before she goes on Twitter.”
“According to Wikipedia, this game was first played in 1299. And, uh, I think some of these people were maybe there.”

Follow the break for the video.

Punch Cutter Lighters

Posted by: Dave Sabot  :  Category: House & Home

When you begin smoking cigars, you are going to have to make a lot of choices. You are going to need to try several different types of cigar so that you can find the brand that suits you best, and you are going to need to find all of your accessories. A few of the accessories that you just can’t live without when you are a cigar aficionado include humidors, which will keep the moisture in the cigars, and a good ashtray to hold your ashes. You will also need to have lighters and cigar cutters. The good news is that you can find cutter and lighter combinations, and that should make choosing the right ones even easier. Some of the cutter types from which you will be able to choose include guillotine cutters and punch cutters.

You will be able to get a punch cutter and lighter combination, which is very beneficial. When you have this combo, you are never without either a cutter or a lighter. This is handy, especially for those who like to head over to their friends’ houses to smoke a cigar or to a cigar bar. You will even find that many of the cutters have key ring attachments, which make them even easier to keep without fear of losing it.

Screenshots from Halo 3

Posted by: Casey Jones  :  Category: Computer & Internet

When a video game series is as wildly popular as the Halo set is (which includes Halo 3, of course) then the result is going to be many screenshots available. This piece concentrates on some of the weird and wild Halo 3 screenshots.

Before mentioning the Halo 3 screenshots specifically, let’s have a look at the numbers that create all of this media. Over 9 million copies of Halo 3 have been sold so far. That means that if every person who bought the game plays for only 10 hours, there are more than 90 million hours of game time from which to select screen shots. A great deal can happen in 90 million hours, and with all the picture-uploading websites online, loads of it has been uploaded.

One of the issues in Halo 3 that has often been documented in Halo 3 screenshots is what Master Chief looks like or more specifically, what his face looks like. If you use a search engine to find the top 10 Halo 3 screenshots, you’ll find a picture of Master Chief lying dead on the ground, clearly not revealing a face inside his helmet. This explains why we never see his face, say many players, because he does not really have one.

Marin County Has Many Excellent Fairs and Festivals

Posted by: David DuPont  :  Category: Travel

Marin County is blessed in both the quality and number of festivals and fairs that it features throughout the summer season. What follows is only a small sampling of those events; most are held in southern Marin County.

The Mountain Play celebrated its 96th year in 2009 with the musical Man of La Mancha. The schedule typically begins at the end of May and runs weekly through a Sunday in latter part of June. The play is held in Mill Valley at the Cushing Memorial Amphitheatre at Mount Tamalpais State Park. Tickets are $23 to $40. While some people choose to hike or bike, shuttle buses are provided and driving is discouraged because parking is limited. Tel: (415) 383-1100, www.mountainplay.org.

Each year, the Italian Street Painting Festival is held from 9 am to 7 pm on two days in mid-June in downtown San Rafael. The medium is chalk. Entrance is free. www.youthinarts.org; Tel: (415) 457-4878, ext. 15

Medion’s 24-inch X9613 multitouch all-in-one PC actually looks pretty hot

Medion has never really been our go-to manufacturer for new hotness, but we’re really digging this new X9613 all-in-one model it’s showing off. Even better than the sexy, the computer is fronting a 24-inch multitouch display, a miniature SideShow screen, a gloriously large physical volume knob, and a bunch of convenient media controls along the bottom. Internals aren’t bad either, with a Core 2 Quad Q9000 processor and GeForce GT240M graphics. The price range, unfortunately, is rather steep at 1,499 to 1,900 Euro (about $2,142 to $2,714 US). Lucky for us, US prices are usually quite a bit lower than straight-up conversion, though there’s no promised roll-out just yet to bank on. Video hands-on is after the break.

MSI’s AMD-powered U210 up for pre-order, still not ‘official’

Who needs press releases? You can snap up an MSI U210 pre-order right this second on Amazon, so why bother waiting MSI to actually confirm the thing for a Stateside release? Morality. That’s why. Kids these days think they can just drop $430 on any old Athlon Neo MV-40-powered (the same chips at the heart of HP’s dv2) 12-inch XGA ultraportable with 2GB of RAM and a 250GB HDD and 802.11n and not have to pay the consequences. Well, we’re not standing for it. That read link right below? Not an implied approval of these illicit activities.
